Relatively new compared to other traditional fields of engineering, the Environmental Engineering field aims to address the environmental issues that have cropped up as a result of both anthropogenic and natural causes. The Environmental Engineering program covers prevention, minimization, monitoring and mitigation of pollution through engineering intervention, operation and strategies. Likewise, it also involves efficient and effective use of resources such as human and financial resources. Specialization may be on any of the following areas: water quality management, air quality management, geo-environment quality management, solid waste and hazardous materials management and environmental systems engineering.
Graduates of environmental engineering may be engaged as designers, consultants, researchers, academics and regulators. Specific tasks may include design of pollution control technologies, monitoring and modeling the environment, assessment of environmental impacts, formulation of policies, and analysis of environmental systems.
As we continue to hurdle new and bigger environmental challenges with scales ranging from local, regional to global, there is a big demand for environmental engineers to ensure that, as we strive for economic growth, the environment and the people are also protected.
